Knitting knots around the family.

Munchkin Monday June 30, 2008

Here is more progress on the Barn Raising baby blanket.

I have 6 solid color blocks to make, 3 in 2 colors, and 2 blocks to make in one varigated colorway.  Current count is 17 out of 25 blocks completed.

This is my makeshift chart I’m working from for color placement.  Blocks with squares = striped squares; shaded = varigated; empty = solid colors.  I’m waiting to assign solid color blocks until they are all done so I can try to place them without having areas that are too dark/light in the finished blanket.

I’m hoping to have all the blocks completed by next week, and then I can start on the baby sweater.  I’ve done it this way so that I can take my time on seaming the blocks and not get too burnt out on this project.

Friday Footsies June 27, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — knottyk @ 10:15 am

First Friday Footsies post.  These socks have been languishing for … a while.  They were supposed to be knee-highs, but I just didn’t have the courage or heart to do them, so they’ve been reborn into just socks for the recipient, who has been extremely patient.  Yarn is Knit Picks Simple Stripes (discontinued), color Autumn.

I think they remind me more of the 60’s/70’s with the “harvest gold”, “avocado”, “burnt orange” thing going on.  The recipient picked this yarn out, not me, and she’s pleased with the colors.  I’m happy she wears the same size shoe as I do (6.5ish) and I won’t be knitting on these forever.  These are also the first SOS socks for me.

Wedding Wednesday June 25, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — knottyk @ 9:29 am

My younger brother-in-law is getting married September 13.  The pastor who married myself and my husband’s older brother is also officiating at this wedding.  I’m sure Pastor John is sighing in relief that he’ll be done with all of the boys of this family soon.  The pattern I’ve chosen for my shawl to wear to this wedding is the Zetor Scarf pattern, a similar pattern to a shawl that I liked in Victorian Lace Today.  This should tell you how much of a knitter I am:  I have the pattern and yarn for my shawl, but I don’t have a dress/pants set for the wedding yet.

Progress of the shawl:

Well, at least I have the yarn and needles.  Yarn is Dream in Color Baby Lace, color Blue Lagoon, better picture here.  This yarn is soft as soft can be, but more sockweight than laceweight.  That’s ok, I’m not complaining.

I hope to cast-on by next week.

Munchkin Monday June 24, 2008

I’m starting days of the week, in hopes of keeping myself sane while the boys are out of school.  “Munchkin Mondays” will center on the baby projects I have going for my fecund cousins, due mid-July, mid-August, and early September.  “Wedding Wednesdays” will be for progress, or lack there of, on the shawl I am going to knit for my BIL’s wedding on September 13.  “Friday Footsies” will focus on my progress, or (again) lack there of, of socks that I am knitting for Summer of Socks 2008.  I’m hoping that doing this will keep me on track for all of these things, and keep me going when I can look back at previous photos and actually see what I’ve accomplished.

So, I know it’s a day late, but here is this week’s Monday Munchkins:

Booties for July’s baby, made from Colinette “Jitterbug”, colorway “Monet”, but I personally think it looks more like sweetpeas under summer skies.  Pink ties are leftovers in Oceanwind Knits in “Berijus”.

Bonnet for July baby, same yarn for main and accent flowers.  The bonnet pattern calls for a bunch of individual flowers, but that just doesn’t do it for me, so I did my own thing after reading Nicky Epstein’s book of appliques and flowers (don’t remember the title at the moment).

I rather like the back of the bonnet, how the decreases make a sort of spiderweb pattern.  I also like that it can accomodate odd-shaped heads, so it will be more likely to fit a squashed newborn head.

Here is an in-progress shot for September’s baby.  September is up before August because of the number of blocks I’m doing for this.  I’m doing a 5×5 block of the Barn Raising Quilt from Knitalong.  Fantastic book, good patterns, great info on why we knitalong, how to start a knitalong of your own, and history of knitalongs.  September is also the only boy out of this batch of babies.  I tend a lot towards blues, so most of this blanket is out of my stash.  Well, maybe half, I’d have to check again.  And it’s sock yarn, so it’s a small, portable project.  I’m just not looking forward to seaming.

This concludes our first installment of “Monday Munchkins” a day late.  Enjoy!

Run Naked June 21, 2008

If you’re living in the Seattle-Area and are enjoying this humid day, good for you.  As for the rest of us, I’m designating this a “Run Naked” day due to it being too sticky to be reasonable and wear clothing.  Apparently, if you live in Florida, they’re pusing for nudity-optional condos

What I did in public June 16, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — knottyk @ 12:48 pm

I knit, of course!  Saturday was World Wide Knit In Public (WWKIP) Day.  The day started off wtih my husband and I bartering unplanted garden seeds and other garden wares to the couple who run this etsy store for fleece for me to spin (they are some cool people and very open to bartering!).  Then we went to the Woodland Park Zoo.

We ended the day here:

Hmm, need an AM radio…

Oh, gee, most people haven’t seen one of these in a while!  Valley 6 Drive-In in Auburn.  Where else could you pay $17 for a family of four for 2 movies and smuggle your own snacks without getting busted?

And also be in your jammies (provided that you don’t sleep in your skivvies!)!  I’m working on the chemo hat for June here.

This place is so old school that the wire you see around the antenna is the booster so you can hear your movie more clearly.  Gotta love it!

Hopefully some finished item pics next time, life’s been a more than a bit crazy.
